Over the years, the abbreviation LGBT has continued to evolve and grow to include all identities. It was against the backdrop of equality movements and marches across the 70s and 80s that LGBT History Month as it is known today was created in the US in 19 in the UK. LGBT History Month began as “Lesbian and Gay History Month”, created by Rodney Wilson, a high-school History teacher who wanted to challenge discrimination and celebrate LGBT history. Pride month is celebrated in June in the UK. Originating in the United States (US), the United Kingdom (UK) celebrates LGBTQ+ History Month in February, whereas celebrations across the pond take place in October. The month is filled with events celebrating equality, regardless of gender or sexual identity. As part of LGBTQ+ History Month, we remember and celebrate important figures and moments in LGBTQ+ history, alongside those who continue to contribute to and celebrate equality in our society today. The two films, Before & After, tell the remarkable tale of how homosexuals, a heretofore hidden and despised group, became a vibrant and integral part of America's family, and, indeed, the world community. In the UK, February is LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, queer) History Month! It is a chance to celebrate the lives, achievements of important LGBTQ+ figures and promote awareness of the LGBTQ+ community. It explores how AIDS literally changed the direction of the movement. It captures the hard work, struggles, tragic defeats and exciting victories experienced since them. After Stonewall, the sequel to Before Stonewall, chronicles the history of lesbian and gay life from the riots at Stonewall to the end of the century. With this outpouring of courage and unity the Gay Liberation Movement had begun. In 1969 the police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City's Greenwich Village, leading to three nights of rioting by the city's gay community. “About : Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Pride Month : Library of Congress.” The Library of Congress, After Stonewall

National Coming Out Day (October 11), as well as the first "March on Washington" in 1979, are commemorated in the LGBTQ community during LGBT History Month. In 1995, a resolution passed by the General Assembly of the National Education Association included LGBT History Month within a list of commemorative months. In 1994, a coalition of education-based organizations in the United States designated October as LGBT History Month. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, and LGBTQ Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world.

In major cities across the nation the "day" soon grew to encompass a month-long series of events. In the United States the last Sunday in June was initially celebrated as "Gay Pride Day," but the actual day was flexible. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan.
